One Thing

By Pastor Mark McAdow
In our “Fully Devoted” Bible study, the Kendrick brothers shared about a scene from the classic movie “City Slickers” where the “city slicker” Mitch was riding side-by-side on  horses with a cowboy named Curly when Curly asked Mitch, “Do you know what the secret of life is?”
Mitch admits, “No, what?”
Curly holds up his index finger and says, “This. One thing. Just one thing.”
Mitch asks, “That’s great, but what’s the one thing?”
Curly smiles and explains, “That’s what you’ve gotta figure out.”

Have you figured it out for your life? What is the meaning of life? Your life? It’s a BIG question worthy of our thought and response.

What is the meaning of your life? Why did the Lord create you and place you in this world at this time? Do you know? Have you thought about that recently or ever? Our life does have meaning because God created you on purpose for a purpose. Are you fulfilling that “one thing?” What do you think?

Until we sincerely answer that question, we’re merely “spinning our wheels.” Busy but not necessarily accomplishing anything of genuine value. We may be working, paying the bills, giving to charities, attending church, and trying to be a good person; but that is merely existing, not really living with purpose.

What is the “one thing” for each of us? Thankfully, Jesus gives us some needed help. In Luke 10:38-42, Dr. Luke records the exchange between Jesus and two sisters who were some of his closest friends. Jesus would even bring their brother Lazarus back to life after being dead three days. That’s an exceptionally good friend! He showed up at their house one day with all his disciples and other followers, too. The older sister Martha went into “overdrive” to care for all the guests, while Mary simply invested her time “soaking in Jesus” sitting at his feet. Here’s the famous exchange…

“As Jesus and his disciples were on their way, he came to a village where a woman named Martha opened her home to him. She had a sister called Mary, who sat at the Lord’s feet listening to what he said.  But Martha was distracted by all the preparations that had to be made. She came to him and asked, “Lord, don’t you care that my sister has left me to do the work by myself? Tell her to help me!”
“Martha, Martha,” the Lord answered, “you are worried and upset about many things, but few things are needed – or indeed only one. Mary has chosen what is better, and it will not be taken away from her.”

"But one thing is necessary. Mary has made the right choice, and it will not be taken away from her.” What’s the one thing? A personal, intimate, growing relationship/friendship with the Lord Jesus Christ. Other things in life are important, but nothing else is essential. We all need Jesus. Everyone you will ever meet needs Jesus if they are yet to know Him. He is the “one thing” in this life.

Are you living today for Jesus? Was your relationship with Him your priority when you woke up today? I pray it will be for us more and more. He really is all that really matters. Live your one and only life for Him today!

Yours in Christ’s love,
Pastor Mark
