This fall I invited you to go on a journey on Wednesday nights studying a book called “Fully Devoted” by the Kendrick Brothers. It has been quite a journey. This is a new Bible study that I had not seen before, but one I would highly recommend to anyone who wants to grow in their relationship with Jesus Christ. It is not for the “faint of heart” because it asks many probing and significant questions. It truly confronts the need to be fully devoted to Jesus Christ. Not to be a CINO – Christian in name only – but a true Christian.
We concluded last evening with a focus on the Great Commission of Jesus to His disciples found in Matthew 28:18-20: Jesus came near and said to them, “All authority has been given to me in heaven and on earth. Go, therefore, and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe everything I have commanded you. And remember, I am with you always, to the end of the age.”
We noted that it is the Great Commission, not the Great Suggestion! It is God’s expectation that each of us would “go and make disciples…” Not simply to give our hearts to Christ, but to become a genuine Christian who in turn shares their faith with another and helps them to grow up into Christ as well. We all need each other – a mature Christian mentor and someone we’re investing in, too. Do you have someone like that? It’s the Lord’s plan to reach the world for Christ, one person at a time. And the promise? He will be with you.
This is Veterans Week, as you know. Monday night I was downtown at the Stride Center for the Veterans Day Legacy Award Ceremony. I was sitting with Pastor Scott and John and Evelyn Allen. Bill and Sally Shaw were also there; Bill made several presentations. We heard an amazing witness for the Lord from the only Native American recipient of The Medal of Honor, Dwight Birdwell.
At the conclusion, a special bronze lapel pin was offered to any Vietnam veterans in attendance. To my surprise, John Allen stood up and was presented a pin. I shook his hand and thanked him for his faithful service. He told me, “This is a lot better reception than what I got when I came home from the war.”
Fully devoted. It’s our goal as Christians first and as Americans, too.
Yours for the Great Commission,
Pastor Mark
PS – “Everyone needs a little Jesus!” ?
