How God Measures Christians

By Pastor Scott Heusel
Many of you know that my father passed away recently at age 94.  He was a wise and godly man.  He would often say things to me when we were out working in the wheat fields together like “It’s the little things that matter in life.”

He was also a big supporter of all the sports I played even though I wasn’t always the biggest or strongest player on the field or court.  He always encouraged me to do my best and try my hardest at everything I did.

Size has always been a factor in team sports.  There are certain individual sports like wrestling and boxing where competition is based upon size and weight.  But in team sports, the little player still is limited to certain positions.  Sometimes even the amount of his/her participation is limited. In most situations, the bigger player can hit the hardest, tackle the surest, hit the ball the farthest, and out jump the others for the pass or the rebound.

There’s no getting around it.  The little player has a whole lot more to prove before he/she gets a shot at a position on the team.  However, there are numerous “smaller” people in sports history who have sufficiently proven themselves.

I actually had a marketing class at Oklahoma State with Barry Sanders, OSU running back and Heisman Trophy winner 1986-1988.  In my opinion, he is one of the greatest running backs of all time, yet he stood 5 foot 8 inches tall and weighed 200 pounds, which is significantly undersized for a running back in college sports.

Isn’t it great that God measures Christians by what is on the inside — not according to feet, inches or pounds. The man/woman who allows Christ and the Word of God to fill him/her up stands tall in any circle. There’s a bigness in the man/woman of God indicated by the way he/she faces problems and how he/she deals with others.

God makes no stipulation about size or weight when He says, “Who will rise up for me against evil doers?  Or who will stand up for me against workers of iniquity?” Psalm 94:16

I am so glad we worship a God that can use us no matter our physical stature to make a difference in this world.

I hope to see you in church on Sunday where we can learn together how God can use us more effectively no matter our size or stature.

God bless you real good!
Pastor Scott
