Today we’ve said “goodbye” to one of the greatest Christians this world has ever known – Dr. James Dobson, founder of Focus on The Family. He was an incredible man of God, Christian psychologist, author, husband, father and faithful witness for Jesus Christ.
Robin shared the news with me today at lunch and I had a similar feeling when Sharla Hughes shared with me years ago of Dr. Billy Graham’s death, while we were visiting our moms at The Commons. A deep sense of loss for us and an incredible sense of joy for Heaven!
Robin and I had the privilege of meeting Dr. Dobson and his wife, Shirley, decades ago at an airport prior to attending the first Focus on The Family Cruise with Oklahoman Dennis Jernigan leading worship. We were celebrating our 20th anniversary. Our flight was delayed, so we went to eat at a Panda Express, and as I turned the corner, I saw him and his wife and shouted out toward him, “Dr. Dobson!” like we were old friends! Can you imagine that? He graciously greeted Robin and me and introduced himself and Shirley to us.
I greeted another person at their table and asked, “who are you?” He quietly answered me that he was Dr. Dobson's personal bodyguard. Dr. Dobson was a man of great faith and integrity – a resolute supporter of the pro-life movement and biblical marriage – and as such he had many enemies as well as friends. “Woe to you when everyone speaks well of you …” – Luke 6:26. There is a cost to speak up for biblical truth, and we know that well.

Dr. Dobson was a truly kind and gracious man. We’ve supported Focus on the Family for many years personally, and we continue to distribute their bi-monthly magazine here at Willow View. It’s an excellent resource for families, couples, widows and widowers, too. Our family has toured their ministry headquarters in Colorado Springs and attended a pastor’s family weekend retreat there, too. We’ve read his books and watched his film series, including The Truth Project, which we showed here at Willow View several years ago.
I thank God for godly men like Dr. James C. Dobson. He enriched our lives and all who have and are blessed by his ministry. The Bible says in II Timothy 4:7: “I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith.” What a fitting tribute to James Dobson. As we remember his life, I know he is hearing our Heavenly Father say to him, “Well done, good and faithful servant.” May it be said of each of us one day. That’s my hope and prayer – to be a faithful witness for Jesus Christ!
Yours in Christ’s love,
Pastor Mark
PS: Remember your homework from last Sunday? Commit to memory Matthew 6:33: “But seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness and all these things will be given to you as well.” No worries, Mates!
