You’ve heard the phrase “silence is golden.” But is it? James encourages us to “Be quick to listen, slow to speak and slow to become angry …” but not to be silent! Christians have been silent much too long. Speaking up does have a cost but silence has a cost as well.
On of my favorite Christian authors was A.W. Tozer. He became a Christian at age 17 after hearing a street preacher speak of love of Jesus Christ and the need to surrender to him. His voice was the voice the Lord used to reach A.W. Tozer and Tozer has used his voice to reach many others too! He wrote this devotional entry titled Guilty Silence and asked, “Is this generation guilty of the sin of silence?” Here’s what he wrote:
The Bible has much to say in praise of prudence, but it has nothing but condemnation for the coward! It is also plainly taught in the New Testament that the soul that is too timid to own and confess Christ before men will be denied before the Father in heaven.
It is apparent that Christian men and women are not speaking out as they should when the Enemy stalks into the very sanctuary and pollutes the holy place! Fun and frolic, films and fiction, Hollywood ideals and religious entertainment, big business techniques and cheap worldly philosophies now overrun the sanctuary. The grieved Holy Spirit broods over the chaos but no light breaks forth.
Could it be that too many of God’s true children – and especially the preachers – are sinning against God by guilty silence? Those who do speak up on the side of Truth will pay a price for their boldness but the results will be worth it!
Oh... by the way. Tozer died in 1963. His observations were well ahead of his time!
Charlie Kirk paid the ultimate price to be a faithful witness for Jesus Christ. His beloved wife Erika, their two young children, his parents and sister and all who loved him are paying a price too. But the organization he founded Turning Point USA not only paid a price, but it is also now exploding with supernatural growth! Tens of thousands of students on high school and college campuses are asking to begin new chapters in their schools. Praise God!
Dr. Ben Carson made an interesting observation about the timing of Charlie Kirk’s assassination. He said it occurred at 12:24PM and he referred to John 12:24 which reads, “I tell you the truth, unless a kernel of wheat falls to the ground and dies, it remains only a single seed. But if it dies; it produces many seeds.” Those are the words of Jesus who proved that point true! Charlie did as well. His legacy is growing in his death, as Jesus’ legacy has grown over the centuries as well! Silence isn’t golden.
Look forward to seeing you this Sunday at Willow View! I just talked to a new neighbor this morning, who said he couldn’t find our church on Willow. I reminded him it’s “Willow View on Purdue!” Invite someone to church this week! Blessings.
Yours in Christ,
Pastor Mark
