I’m talking about you! I know I’m a preacher, but really in my heart I’m a pastor first. But, what about you?
The very first sermon preached every Sunday is not really by me, but by you. How so? You preach a message of good cheer and friendship when you say “good morning” to those you meet in our parking lot or the Welcome Center, sanctuary or your Sunday school class or Discipleship Community. You preach a message of "welcome” when you slide over in the pew to make room for others rather than making them crawl over you. You preach a message of hope and joy when you sing enthusiastically during worship. You preach a message about the power of prayer when you reverently enter into a time of prayer.
You preach a message of mutual respect, when you listen attentively while the choir sings, band plays, special music is offered, or as the message is preached. You preach a message of love when you smile and say “hello” and introduce yourself to a visiting guest. You preach about your sincere faith when you faithfully give your tithes and offerings. You preach a message about the importance of God’s Word when you open your Bible and/or stand for the reading of the Scripture (if you’re physically able).
Many messages are preached long before Scott, a guest preacher or I stand up to share the sermon. If your message is positive, sincere and enthusiastic, the message from the pulpit is likely to be better received as well! Come every Sunday morning “prayed up” and prepared to preach your best sermon. I will, too!
Looking forward to seeing my “favorite” folks this Labor Day Sunday.
Special thanks to the Quincy, Kentucky, Church of Christ for some of these helpful thoughts today.
Yours in Chris’s love,
Pastor Mark
What’s new at Willow View? I’m excited to bring a brand new six-week series on Wednesday nights beginning Wednesday, Sept 10, at 6 p.m. in the sanctuary. It’s a video series called “Truth Rising” by Focus on the Family and the Chuck Colson Center exploring God’s truth in our modern culture. It will feature some great men and women of God sharing their biblical views and an opportunity for discussion following. Many of you remember the excellent Truth Project from the same folks a few years ago. More details next week.
