What comes to you mind when you hear the word, “chosen?” What kind of feelings are associated with that word for you? We’ve been talking about our identity in Youth the past few Wednesday evenings. We’ve looked at diverse groups at school (popular kids, troublemakers, athletes, band kids, brainiacs, cheerleaders, etc.). Many times we get our identity from those we associate with or share common interests with. That’s true even for adults.
The first question men often ask other men is “What do you do for a living?” I assume working women do the same, but also ask about relational issues like boyfriends, marriage, and kids too! We often try to categorize people based on what they do.
Last week at Youth, I affirmed three great truths from God’s Word about who we are in Christ: 1. I am a child of God, 2. I am a friend of Jesus, and 3. I am righteous. I added three more last night: 1. I am a citizen of heaven, 2. I am chosen by Jesus, and 3. I have been justified. I explained that was a “churchy word” meaning I have been declared “Not guilty!” though I am guilty, because of the blood of Jesus Christ! Praise the Lord!
You have been chosen. Do you believe that? Jesus said this in John 15:16, “You did not choose me, but I chose you and appointed you to go and bear fruit-fruit that will last.” Obviously, that is not bananas! Spiritual fruit. I’ve spoken recently about the Great Commandment and the Great Commission- the final words of Jesus found in Mathew 28:19-20. We have been chosen and to “Go and make disciples!” You can’t do something that you are not. What does it look like to be a genuine disciple (follower of Jesus) in this world? We’ll be talking about that very thing this next month! Jesus’ final words should be our first concern!
How does it feel to be “chosen” … for the team, the part in the play, as a cheerleader or member of the Academic team? Do you remember those days? More often, we remember not being selected, rejected, or ignored. That’s what our teens often wrestle with emotionally and socially, but what about you? How does it feel to be chosen by God? It feels good. In fact, it doesn’t get better than that! Chosen by the only One who really matters. Your Creator and Savior!
