Some of you may remember this line from the Blues Brothers movie back in the 1980s, but the concept is much older than that. It’s what we discussed last Sunday in worship with Jesus’ Great Commission from Matthew 28:18-20. Jesus truly was on a “mission from God” and invites and expects us to join him in that mission, too. We are his “commissioned” foot soldiers sharing the love of Jesus with others and fulfilling the mission of “going and making disciples.”
I asked last Sunday, “Do you consider yourself a disciple?” and the follow-up question, “Am I a disciple maker?” You can’t be one unless you are one first.
Almighty God sent Jesus on a “rescue mission” to save each of us. Thankfully, he did not ignore His Father’s request or give up on the task because it was costly. He diligently searched for us and found us in our desperate condition, without any hope, and showed us the way back home. Jesus is “The Way, The Truth and The Life; no one comes to the Father except through him.” - John 14:6. No one. He is the only way!
Your family, friends, fellow students, neighbors, co-workers and even your enemies all need Jesus. He’s put those folks in your life to reach them. You and I are on a mission from God, too!
Last week, we were poignantly reminded of the New York City firefighters, police officers and first responders who risked their very lives to save their fellow Americans on 9-11. Hundreds of them gave their lives in the process. It’s risky to attempt to save someone’s life, but aren’t you glad Jesus counted you worthy to save? It cost Him his life as well.
Who are you praying for these days to come to know Jesus Christ? Who are you investing in to help them become a disciple and to grow as one? Christ is counting on us and inviting us to join him in what he is doing. It is the ultimate mission of all! He calls us and he goes with us “to the end of the age.” - Matthew 28:20. He calls us all to be His “missionaries!”
